Radar

Radar is an old technique mainly used to measure distance and object speed in the environment for example to detect planes. Due to the rapid development in the automotive industry the radar has become accessible for everybody. In the last 5 years complete radar systems in all sorts and types are available in a single chip. Some even with antennas onboard essential dropping the need of RF knowledge and design. It has become software based solution.

As denoted radar is mainly used for measuring distance and object speed, but also other applications are seeing the light with radar-system-on-chip such as presence sensing, breath and heartbeat monitoring and tank level measurements. Many others are to come.

We believe that radar has large potential and holds considerably share in the future in all kinds of applications. Therefor we are conduction a research involving radar in a new measurement application. First of all to discover whether this particular idea has positive results, second to gain knowlegde on small radar-system-on-chip to apply it in for example a customers application.

One of the radar systems we are currently using in our research is the Texas Instruments mmWave radar system which has no onboard antennas. This could be an advantage in future giving flexibility designing a custom radar sensor.
